What we know — and how

Scripture tells us

  • He was a fisherman, the brother of Andrew, and was married (Jesus healed his mother-in-law).(Matthew 4:18; Mark 1:29–31)
  • Jesus gave him the name Peter / Cephas, “rock”.(Matthew 16:18; John 1:42)
  • He denied Jesus three times and wept bitterly; after the Resurrection Jesus asked him three times “lovest thou me?” and entrusted him with his sheep.(Luke 22:54–62; John 21:15–19)
  • Jesus foretold the kind of death by which he would glorify God.(John 21:18–19)

Tradition holds

  • Peter went to Rome, led the Church there and was martyred under Nero; the Catholic Church understands the Bishop of Rome as his successor.Source: Early Christian testimony (e.g. Clement of Rome, Irenaeus); Catholic teaching on the papacy — detailed sources pending review
  • He asked to be crucified upside down, judging himself unworthy to die as Christ did.Source: Later tradition (apocryphal Acts of Peter); historically uncertain

Historians debate

  • The exact date of his death (commonly placed c. AD 64–68) and the authorship of 2 Peter.

Unknown

  • His date of birth, his wife's name, and most details of his life between Acts 15 and his death.

Virtues

  • Boldness
  • Love for Jesus
  • Readiness to follow
  • Repentance

Failures

  • Impulsiveness
  • Fear under pressure
  • Denial of Jesus

Why Peter matters

Peter shows that the Church is built not on people who never fail, but on people who are forgiven and sent. His story is the Gospel's clearest picture of failure turned into mission.
