Why did Jesus die?

What you will understand today

What happened historically — and why Christians say Jesus died for us.

In simple words

Historically, Jesus was arrested in Jerusalem at Passover, handed over by some religious leaders who saw him as a blasphemer, and crucified by the Roman governor Pontius Pilate as a supposed king of the Jews.

But the Gospels insist that his life was not simply taken from him: he gave it freely. At the Last Supper he called his body given and his blood poured out for many.

Christians believe that on the Cross Jesus took on himself the weight of human sin and broke its power — not to change God's mind about us, but to show how far God's love goes.

Key Bible passage

Perhaps the most famous verse in the Bible: why God gave his Son.

16For God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth in him, may not perish, but may have life everlasting.

Did you know?

Historical context

The cross became a common Christian symbol only gradually. Early Christians often used other signs, such as the fish — in Greek ichthys, the initials of Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour.

A common misconception

The Jews killed Jesus.

In fact

The Church firmly rejects blaming the Jewish people for Jesus' death. It teaches that all sinners are the cause of his Passion — and that Jesus prayed for those who crucified him.

A question to take with you

Jesus said there is no greater love than to give your life for your friends. Who has given something real for you?

One small thing for today

Read Luke 23:33-43 slowly: the crucifixion and the good thief.
