A relationship is hurting

Relationships are where we are most loved — and most hurt. Jesus had friends, family and disciples who misunderstood him. He did not give a technique. He showed a way of loving.

This is my commandment, that you love one another, as I have loved you.

John 15:12 · Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition

If you are in danger, your safety comes first: contact emergency services (112 in Europe) or a support line now.

If you remember that someone has something against you, go first and be reconciled, then come back and offer your gift.

What Christian tradition learns from this

Scripture

Paul describes love: patient, kind, not self-seeking, not keeping a record of wrongs.1 Corinthians 13:4–7

Church teaching

Christ is the source of the grace of marriage: spouses receive a grace to love each other with the love with which Christ loved the Church. CCC 1641–1642

What Jesus did

  1. He washed their feet

    John 13:1–15
    Direct
    What Jesus experienced
The last evening with friends who argued about who was the greatest.
    What Jesus did
He took a towel and washed their feet — including the feet of the one who would betray him.
    What Jesus said

“For I have given you an example, that as I have done to you, so you do also.”

    John 13:15 · Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition

  2. His own family misunderstood him

    Mark 3:20–21
    Direct
    What Jesus experienced
Relatives who thought he had gone out of his mind.
    What Jesus did
He stayed faithful to his mission without breaking with them — his mother is with him to the end.
  3. Two sisters

    Luke 10:38–42
    Interpretive
    What Jesus experienced
Tension at home: one sister working, the other listening, and a complaint.
    What Jesus did
He didn't take sides against either of them; he pointed both to what matters most.

What Scripture doesn’t tell us

Love never requires you to accept abuse. If you are being hurt — physically or emotionally — or feel unsafe, your safety comes first: reach out to someone you trust or a support service. The Church does not ask anyone to stay in danger.

Someone who walked this road

Pray

Lord, you know the people I love and how hard it is right now. Teach me to love as you love: with truth, patience and courage. Heal what can be healed between us. Amen.

Written for Lumen as a simple personal prayer — not a liturgical text.

One thing to do today

Do one concrete act of love for the person today without announcing it. If there is something to repair, take the first step: one honest sentence, not a speech.

  • What does this person need from you that you have not given yet?
  • What do you need, and have you said it clearly?
